For aircraft owners

Weight and balance from your airplane's own handbook.

Pick your type's handbook, enter your airplane's empty weight and arm, and load it the way you'll fly. Over gross or outside the envelope, it refuses and says why. Takeoff and landing distance come from the same handbook.

One aircraft, its handbook and its weight and balance are free. Reference only, not an FAA-approved flight manual.

Verified handbooks you can pick for your airplane

  • 1971 Cessna 172L
  • 1977 Cessna 172N
  • 1982 Cessna 172P
  • 1967 Mooney M20F

The 1967 Mooney M20F's handbook prints no table of loading arms, so its weight and balance stays off. Its takeoff and landing calculators still work.

It says no, and it says why.

Each refusal names the limit it broke and by how much. Where there's nothing honest to compute from, it says so instead of showing a number. Reference only, not an FAA-approved flight manual.

  • Over max gross

Refused, with how far over it is, to the tenth of a pound.

  • CG outside the envelope

Refused when the CG sits forward or aft of the limit at that weight. It's plotted as the fuel burns, so a load that drifts out on the way down shows too.

  • Past a baggage placard

Refused against the placard, compartment by compartment where the handbook has two.

  • No weighing on file

No CG at all until you enter your airplane's empty weight and arm. It never borrows another airplane's weighing.

Takeoff and landing distance, from the published tables.

The calculators read the same handbook as the weight and balance: its own takeoff and landing tables, for the weight and conditions you enter.

  • Read between the printed rows, never extrapolated past the edge of the table.
  • Corrected for wind, temperature and grass the way that handbook says, and not at all where it says nothing.
  • Where a handbook prints a graph instead of a table, that calculator stays off rather than reading a chart by eye.

Reference only, not an FAA-approved flight manual. Check every figure against the flight manual for your serial number.

Takeoff and landing distance

Cessna 172H
Ground run
1,476 ft
To clear 50 ft
2,916 ft

Density altitude about 7,921 ft, from the pressure altitude and temperature.

Takeoff data, 1967 Owner's Manual. The handbook's own notes, applied as printed:

  • Increase distance 10% for each 25°F above standard temperature for the particular altitude.
  • Dry grass runway: increase both ground run and total distance by 7% of the 'total to clear 50 ft obstacle' figure.

Reference only, not an FAA-approved flight manual.

For each of these the engine reproduces the handbook's published tables in automated checks, run on every change. Pick yours when you add your airplane, then enter its weighing.

Verified means the engine reproduces the published tables of that type's handbook. It doesn't mean those numbers fit your airplane: your empty weight, equipment and modifications come from your own records, and the flight manual for your serial number, its placards and your current weight and balance record are the authority.

Put your tail on it tonight.
